Sacred Elephanta: Private Caves & Breathtaking Island Escape
No address available
The Elephanta Caves are situated in Western India on Elephanta Island (also called the Island of Gharapuri), which highlights two hillocks isolated by a tight valley. The little island is dabbed with various old archeological remaining parts that are the sole declarations to its rich social past. These archeological remaining parts uncover proof of occupation from as soon as the second century BC. The stone cut Elephanta Caves were built about the mid-fifth to sixth hundreds of years AD. The most significant among the caverns is the incomparable Cave 1, which estimates 39 meters from the front access to the back. In plan, this cavern in the western slope intently looks like Dumar Lena cave at Ellora, in India. The principal body of the cavern, barring the porches on the three open sides and the back passageway, is 27 meters square and is upheld by lines of six sections each. Elephanta Caves are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Manoj Bhai was our tour guide at the Elephanta caves and he gave us very detailed history and explained it in length and with great patience. He took great pictures and showed us where to stand for better lighting and had great knowledge of what he spoke of. Overall Manoj Bhai was a very kind and welcoming guide and made the experience a whole lot better. We enjoyed our time with him and enjoyed a great day out.

We opted for a private speedboat which was so much fun in and of itself. We learned about the oil tankers and oil shipping and receiving,as we passed the huge ships. We had a nice and comfortable speedboat, and Abhi was a good guide for that. Once we got to the island our guide Manoj joined us. He was born and lives on the island so his shared experiences added to our understanding. He was an excellent guide to the amazing caves. We arrived early and had the place to ourselves so the silence and peace was a blessing. Manoj paced the tour and explanations, so we could really enjoy the place. He also knew all the good photo stops and took great pictures of us. As it is a long climb up I opted for the “Maharaji seat” lifted by 4 islanders, while my partner walked up. Most people walked up, but I was glad to have that option and also to contribute to the men’s income. 90% of the 1200 islanders depend upon tourist dollars. There are lots of places to eat on the island. We opted for grilled corn and fresh squeezed sugarcane juice.

Our group debated doing this and we were glad that we did. Really cool place. Having a knowledgeable tour guide to navigate the journey is a must. Rajat was ours and great every step of the way. Very helpful and clear. He guided us through the crowds like a pro and explained the history and symbolism the way only a local could.

Manoj is an excellent guide. He provided a lot of detailed information about the various panels in all the caves. Ria accompanied us on the ferry and told us about the landmarks in Mumbai. Highly recommended.
