Unforgettable Hana Journey: Maui Waterfalls, Black Sand & Turtles

Oscar was the best guide and host for this exciting excursion. I am so grateful that we did not drive ourselves. The road is full of curves and is very narrow. We would have spent all of our time on road safety and would have missed everything so beautiful and remarkable about the land and environment! Oscar was very knowledgeable and friendly. We loved his willingness to slow down for pictures. We stopped at a stand that sold many treats. We bought a banana bread loaf, a brownie and a macadamia nut bar-all very delicious. So much beauty is hard to capture in a review. You have to see it to believe it!! Be prepared to enjoy the black sand beach! I highly recommend this adventure. I would do it again and again.

People in the group are from US and Canada, but we had hard time to understand our tour guide’s English. Didn’t think tour in Hawaii would run into language problems. Also our guide was not very professional, when we were already late back to our ship he stopped at a location, which is not part of the tour , to take care of his own business.

looked forward to this tour, tour driver turned up and said regular guy sick. he apologised that he had just had throat surgery and voice not strong. this resulted in not being able to hear most of his commentary. first stop was a beach, very nice. then we were directed to look over at next beach to see turtles- couldnt tell the turtles from the large rocks. quick stop for snacks at roadside shop then on to black sand beach. we were left there for an hour and a half, van locked, the few seating areas already taken, nowhere to buy lunch. when someone in group asked about lunch stop when driver appeared, we were told, lunch on ship. then driven back to ship. whole tour seemed rushed and we were disappointed

October 2025. We left early from time Share in Maui to explore the road to Hana. From searching on line. the last real town we passed on the way was Pia..beautiful town, across from ocean, shops... didn't stop as we were on the "Road to Hanna" From what I viewed on line, I believed that was what was waiting for us in Hana. I've never been more disappointed than I was that day. Road was like driving a small alley way. We knew several bridges. You were not able to stop anywhere take in views. People tailgated and actually passed you! idiots. Locals clearly, by their speed, and who knew their way, were doing about 30+, in what really is about 10-15 MPH area. Too many curves, extremely dangerous road. Never would I drive it at night. Then one person killed a wild boar and was loading it into their vehicle, or gutting it on the road. sister said look away! . Disgusting to see when you're trying to enjoy your vacation. The only good thing about trip was, we found Aunt Sandy's Banana bread stand. OUTSTANDING. we did go to Black beach as well. You had to reserve a time, which we had... and we hardly spent any time, waves high, small beach and packed with people. I'm just glad we got back in one peace. Never gain. Do a fly over, would be safer. When we reached the end and wee in Hana.. Few small shops, a general store. Nothing much worth stopping for or seeing. Road to hell and back

This was a great excursion - the Maui Fantastic team took extra steps to make sure all members of my group were included and comfortable. Our guide was very informative and made sure to give us great background on the areas we visited and the history of Hana and the road. Highly recommended!

Oscar was our guide on the Road to Hana tour. He was informative on the history of Maui. He provided a safe drive through the winding roads.

Sitting in the back of the van, we could not hear the guide/driver throughout the tour. We asked about the mic volume but he indicated it could not be adjusted. No stop or mention of turtle tour. Black Sand Beach was definitely the highlight. Mixed emotions regarding a recommendation. Maybe a different guide/driver. He indicated that he was filling in for the guide/driver.

Oscar was our tour guide. He arrived on time and was pleasant and informative. We would hire him again. The meet place was at the Ross parking lot. Only a short taxicab ride away. Gratuities were not included so we added a 15 percent tip (not out of line if you figure that the tour is about 6-7 hours long)

There was not much history or narration. There were no stops at the waterfalls. What speaking happened was difficult to hear.

Road is very winding and will give some motion sickness. The views are very nice. Black sand beach was nice but crowded. We didn't stop at any waterfalls, just the black sand beach, halfway to Hana for a quick snack, and a state park for a bathroom break. The air in the van was okay but could be better. The speaker system for the driver to talk is very poor. If you are in the back seat you will not hear them. I think they should switch to the individual hearing boxes like other tours use. We only had an hour at black sand beach and wish it was longer. The driver did a great job driving and never made anyone feel unsafe. He never offered water until others asked. If I could have heard the driver better this would probably be 4 stars instead of 3.
