Cultural Experience & Seasonal Māori Cuisine at Te Pā Tū
Feast on song, drama, tradition, and divine seasonal kai (cuisine) within our forest Pā (village) blanketed by towering Tawa trees, its blazing bonfires, and forest-formed amphitheatre.
Te Pā Tū offers 4-hour evening events that change with each season of the maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar.
Across summer, Tū Te Rā celebrates an abundant harvest, and we explore concepts, rituals, and stories of ancient Māori warfare and peace.
Throughout winter, Tū Te Ihi marks promise heralded by the arrival of the Matariki star cluster which high and bright in winter skies, signalling the new lunar year – we share the energy and passion of this celebration.
Cultural knowledge unique to each season is shared from the outset – rituals, songs, stories and continue across the night. From the beginning too, we share local, seasonal kai - plentiful and delicious. Kai horotai (indigenous canapes) is followed by a torch lit walk to a lavish 3-course fusion feast.

We learned a lot about the culture and food of the Māori people. The performers were excellent. It was also fun to be an active participant in the experience.

This family operation works hard to both entertain and educate. This was a great hands-on way to learn about Maori history and culture, and the food was great too!

A nice village. Learn a little more about the Maori culture. Would have liked less time on playing game and more time on knowing more about traditions and history. The meal was just ok (wine not included).

This was an amazing experience! I really was only expecting to have a meal and learn a little bit more about the Maori people. What I got to experience was a full welcome and exposure to a people I thought I knew of but absolutely didn't. This family was authentic, vibrant, funny, and powerful. And their openness to outsiders along with just really wanting to share their culture was amazing. I loved the games and other things we learned at the teaching houses. Their singing was awesome, and I don't understand how you can have so many talented singers in one family. The food was delicious and high quality. This for me is like an unforgettable moment, and something I needed to see. You don't come across a energy like this often, and their vibe is contagious. Absolutely would recommend!

I loved the interaction and the personal touch that was given to this experience. My husband and I have attended several cultural experiences similar to this, but I would rate this as one of my favorites!

Such a fun experience! Everyone we interacted with - from the host, to the bus driver (Dennis was the best!), to the performers, to the wait staff - were all so friendly and accommodating. They helped to make the evening enjoyable and memorable. It was a great taste of Māori culture, I’d highly recommend this experience!

Absolutely amazing! Way better than anticipated even with all the rain that evening. Food was fantastic. Family owned and run and they certainly do their best to make sure you get the full experience.

I was blown away at every aspect of this experience. I had a smile on my face ear to ear for the whole 3-4 hours. I don’t want to give anything away for people yet to experience. But just 11/10 this is a MUST do if you’re in Rotorua, you won’t regret it 😊 This was my favourite thing we did in NZ for our whole trip, and we even went to Hobbiton so if you know, you know. Book Te Pa Tu 😂✨

I had a wonderful time at Te Pa Tu for the evening performance. We were greeted with a ceremony, given appetizers made from local ingredients, taught how to use the Pom poms and sticks, and played games. The performance was incredible, and they even sang songs from each of the countries represented in the audience! Dinner must have had 5 or more courses, with every type of product: animal, vegetable, grains and fruits, prepared exquisitely in the pits - wow, melt in your mouth! Shared tables for dinner seating, so we could all chat together. What an incredible, intimate experience, with a family from a Māori tribe hosting us.
